Technological entry in new niches: Diversity, crowding and generalism

چکیده
Entry in new technological domains is essential for the long-term performance of firms. Therefore, it important to understand conditions that increase likelihood firms enter, and further explore, domains. Some recent studies have started unpack these issues by looking at environmental a domain pull into it. In this paper, we complement firm's current push We do from perspective ecology, how diversity crowding niche, as well knowledge generalism, affect firm enters, explores, niches. To test our hypotheses, rely on an empirical setting based U.S. patents 340 pharmaceutical industry. propose novel advanced approach that, leveraging vast set classifications, extracts niches patent system they evolve over time.

Ecological Niches and Diversity Maintenance
Why do some places have much higher diversity than others? Explaining patterns of species diversity on the earth is a problem of long-standing for ecologists. Numerous diversity patterns have been documented [1], but the mechanisms behind these patterns remain poorly understood. If we knew the mechanisms, surer decisions in conservation and management would be possible. Understanding can be sou...
متن کاملDiversity and Technological Progress
This paper proposes a tractable model to study the equilibrium diversity of technological progress and shows that equilibrium technological progress may exhibit too little diversity (too much conformity), in particular, foregoing socially bene cial investments in alternativetechnologies that will be used at some point in the future. The presence of future innovations that will replace current...

Our contribution to the expanding literature on the globalization of research and innovation is to investigate the extent to which sector-specific developments in an emerging technology (such as increasing interdisciplinarity and complexity) affect inventive activities developed abroad. We look at how technological diversity and scientific excellence of host countries in the field of nanotechno...
متن کاملHost preference, niches and fungal diversity.
Ectomycorrhizal fungi occur in remarkably species-rich assemblages. One of the prevailing hypotheses to explain this diversity is niche differentiation; by occupying distinct ecological niches within a site, multiple fungal species are able to co-occur (Bruns, 1995). In this issue of New Phytologist (pp. 000–000), Ishida and colleagues make a significant contribution to our understanding of nic...
